Build and install from the repository
From a local checkout, with Java 21, Android SDK 36, Build Tools
36.0.0, and ADB on your path. Set ANDROID_HOME or sdk.dir in your untracked local.properties; connect your device
with USB debugging enabled.
This builds a locally signed debug APK, not a production release. The
first physical target is BOOX Note Air 5 C on Android 15; writing
latency still needs device validation.
A few useful details
Before you turn the page.
Which devices can I use?
SuperBoox requires Android 10 or newer and a 64-bit ARM device. The first physical target is the BOOX Note Air 5 C on Android 15. BOOX uses the native firmware pen engine; other Android stylus devices use the generic GPaper engine. The journal is portrait-only. Physical-device writing latency still needs validation.
Does my handwriting leave the device?
Journal pages and confirmed ToDos, including their editable ink, are saved in the app’s private local storage. English and German task recognition runs on device after a one-time language-model download of about 20 MB per language. Network access is used for model downloads and ML Kit SDK operation. Handwriting is not sent to a cloud OCR service.
How do calendars and Webcal subscriptions work?
Connect accounts using installed calendar software, such as DAVx⁵, and grant SuperBoox calendar access. SuperBoox reads and writes Android’s Calendar Provider; your provider handles account synchronization and reminders. Webcal links are handed to ICSx⁵ for subscription setup, then appear as read-only device calendars after sync.
Can I edit recurring events or invitations?
Recurring events, recurrence exceptions, and meetings or invitations are view-only. You can create, edit, and delete one-off events in writable calendars, including all-day events, locations, descriptions, and provider-supported reminders. Handwritten event fields are recognized, reviewed, and saved as text.
Is there a cloud backup or web editor?
Notebook and ToDo sync, export, the Nextcloud app, and a browser editor are deferred. This website is a feature showcase, not an editor. Calendar synchronization is separate and depends on the calendar provider installed on your device.
A little less in your head. A little more on the page.
